Welcome to Hinterberg, the newest tourist hotspot situated in the Austrian Alps! In Dungeons of Hinterberg, you take on the shoes of a burnt-out law intern named Luisa who badly needs a break from her corporate life. And what better way to do that than to book a slaycation over at Hinterberg? Take on dungeons and monsters to become a Master Slayer!

As an action-adventure dungeon crawling RPG, Dungeons of Hinterberg’s gameplay includes taking down monsters in the dungeons with your trusty sword, wielding magic, and solving puzzles hidden in the dungeon depths. But that is only part of the fun—as Hinterberg’s streets are full of thrill-seekers such as the protagonist Luisa, building relationships with them to stay updated with the latest happenings is a must! Learn from the experts and grow stronger, both in skills and in relationships. While on a break from dungeon exploration, Luisa can snowboard down the icy glaciers, zipline through a lush forest, climb a mountain to the top, or just have a steaming cup of coffee by the peaceful lake. You can even pet the dog! Hang out with Snowflake, the adorable pooch. Befriend him, and he’ll dig up some great hidden loot for you too.

Swords And Schnitzels

Microbird Games is a small independent game studio based in Vienna, Austria, working on their first ever game, Dungeons of Hinterberg. They have featured the game in several showcases as of late, such as ID@Xbox Digital Showcase and Gamescom.

"The two of us just started this project out from home basically, it being a prototype, and started to tweet a little bit and show off some artwork. I think it worked quite well because the artwork was a bit of a more unusual take, and we actually got a lot of people who actually approached us and were interested - it was during the pandemic so we pitched from home just on video call," Microbird Games’ co-founder Regina Reisinger said to Eurogamer at the Summer Game Fest 2023.

"Xbox also approached us at that time, and I think in terms of the social mix, what we found with early tweets was that it kind of draws people's attention, when they have a modern setting but also someone who has a sword and there's magic and a cable car, what's going on there? And I think that was intriguing to people, so it kind of worked well, people were not really weirded out but more fascinated by it."

The game is inspired by the Legend of Zelda and Persona 5, which eager fans have picked up on and the studio acknowledged these homages. The studio is actively posting on their social media on updates for the game, so check them out on Twitter (X), Instagram, and Facebook!

Stroll And Slay In The Scenic Alps

Dungeons of Hinterberg is a game with a quirky and vivid comic book-esque art style which is sure to turn some heads. The vibrant art and colors stand out in the idyllic setting of the Alps, and add an artistic flair to it. To add to that, culturally, as the studio is based in Austria, the monsters you will encounter in the game all take inspiration from Alpine and Austrian mythology.
