Free Indie Games To Try (September 2024)

Hours of fun for free!

Interesting Indie Games To Play For FREE!

Your Wallet Will Thank You

With thousands upon thousands of games out on the market, one can only have so much time and money to spend on playing these wonderful games. However, there are some shiny gaming gems on the internet, hidden or not, that cost next to nothing, and provide a few hours of fun for a chill afternoon or a free evening. Here are some indie games that won’t cost you a dime to play—just plug and play!

Supermarket Together

Run a supermarket empire with your friends in Supermarket Together! Have your friends stock the shelves with the products, help the customers checkout at the cashier, make sure that the supermarket is sparkly clean, or chase away the pesky shoplifters with their trusty broom! With the power of teamwork and money, turn your small-town supermarket into a successful one. Up to a whopping 16 players can play all at one session, ultimately ensuring a hilariously chaotic experience.

Supermarket Together can be downloaded through Steam, and playable on Windows.

Directory Dungeon

For a rather unique gaming experience, newly released dungeon crawler text game Directory Dungeon has you dragging and dropping your character through different folders right on your desktop! Dragging and dropping the player folder will enable you to move around the dungeon, while placing items into your person will let you hold them. Items can be used by deleting the file, or placed in the Equipment folder to be equipped. Even though it’s a short but fully finished project (Developer JuhrJuhr has explicitly said that this is as far as this mini-project is going, as they “wanted to keep it small and just execute a simple idea”), it’s definitely worth a look for an hour or two of fun.

Directory Dungeon is available for download on JuhrJuhr’s Itch.io page.

A Dark Forest

This incremental and experimental minimalist game takes heavy inspiration from the ASCII-art text adventure game A Dark Room. You, the unnamed protagonist, wake up in a dark and empty world. You then gradually build your own little village, growing into a citadel as you amass resources and efficiently manage them, in an attempt to eradicate the forest from the evils that lurk within. Will you be able to reach the end? Every week, there is a new update or development blog, or even both. While it’s in early development, it’s constantly evolving and players are able to experience something new every week.

The game can be played in browser on the A Dark Forest’s official Itch.io page.

Shroom And Gloom

Shroom and Gloom is a first-person, roguelike deck-builder that has you go against mushroom monstrosities through the heart of The Gloom! Build two distinct decks, one for combat and one for exploring, upgrading them into better versions the farther you go. There are endless possibilities for growth, and using your cards the right way will let you make monstrous mega-combos to turn yourself into a powerhouse. Hack and slash them to pieces to ensure your survival, or eat them seasoned and roasted—after all, they’re mushrooms. You can even whip up a delicious soup if you throw them into a pot!

The current game is actually an early prototype for the full game, as developers Team Lazerbeam are now exploring its potential. They have their sights set on creating it as a full game eventually, so playing the game and sharing it will help them immensely!

Shroom and Gloom’s early prototype version can be downloaded on Team Lazerbeam’s official Itch.io.

Dead Plate

Follow lively waiter Rody on his shifts at a fancy restaurant called La Gueule de Saturne, owned by the charismatic Vince, in an attempt to make as much money as he can within a week. However…there’s something about the restaurant and its owner. Dead Plate is a 2D restaurant tycoon-themed horror RPG game with visual novel and point-and-click elements, set in France in the 1960s. Rody will try the job out for one week, and depending on your choices throughout the game, one of four different endings will play out.

Dead Plate is available to download and play for free on RachelDrawsThis’ official Itch.io, however players are free to add a price of their own to support the developer! This is not RachelDrawsThis’ first foray into the scene, having created previous titles as well, all with their own little interesting twists.
