RKGK / Rakugaki is One Stylish 3D Platformer
Restore color and life to a bland city with your paint can and graffiti!
Jump, Run, And Fly With Style in RKGK
Bring Down The Baddies With A Flair Of Color
RKGK / Rakugaki brings you into Valah’s world in Cap City, where its been taken over by the corporate tool Mr. Buff and his lackeys, who wanted all forms of self-expression eliminated. Once a city full of color and life, it is now devoid of any personality. Accompany Valah and her RKGK crew to take this oppressive system down and take back the city from their clutches. “Rise above conformity. Unleash creativity in a city awaiting revolution. Your art is a symbol of our uprising.”
As a linear 3D platformer, players will control protagonist Valah as she flies through the air with jumps, dashes, glides, and grinds, all while armed with her trusty spray paint can as her weapon. Combat is rather simple, spraying and ramming into enemies with blasts from the paint can. Sliding and flying around with paint is very reminiscent of Splatoon, as Valah is able to move quicker using her spray paint to glide across the floor. All of these aspects come together fluidly, as it should in a fast-paced platformer.
Besides combat, you would also need to collect Ghosts hidden around the levels. Of course as a symbol of a vividly colored revolution, plenty of paint and cosmetic customization choices are available for your perusal. You can make sure that Valah takes down the baddies with style and rainbows!
A Tribute To Their Childhood
Wabisabi Games is a game development team based in Latin America who focuses on creating both traditional and AR (Augmented Reality) games. Their portfolio consists mainly of AR mini games for social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, marking RKGK as their debut into the PC game scene, four years in the making.
They cite their inspirations from the retro platformers, anime, and graffiti they grew up with as children, and wanted to share the love they have for those through RKGK. And it shows—it’s a 3D platformer centered on color and graffiti with an anime-like art style. Even through its title; Rakugaki, or colloquially written as RKGK, is the Japanese word for sketch or doodle. RKGK also pays tribute to well-known anime and manga, with several costumes inspired by Hunter x Hunter, Dragon Ball, and Akira, among others. They also noted on a Twitter (X) post three inspirations that made RKGK—namely, Jet Set Radio, the aforementioned Akira, and Spyro the Dragon.
A Trendy Platformer That Delivers A Nice Audio-Visual Experience
Just from the Steam store page and trailers themselves, RKGK presents itself as an incredibly stylish and trendy 3D platformer, which is a genre with not many indie titles under its belt. 2D platformers are more commonplace, so RKGK is a breath of fresh air and a treat for those who are looking for an experience like Psychonauts and Jax & Daxter, even Sonic the Hedgehog.
And even if you’re not a fan of platformers, the ambience and visuals of the entire game may be able to pull you in. The whole world centers around graffiti and colors, merged with techno beats in the soundtrack that hype up the game wherever you go. It’s a fantastic debut game for Wabisabi, and definitely one to try.
RKGK / Rakugaki is now available on PC (Steam).
