Ao Oni “Evolved” Coming to Steam and Nintendo Switch This July

Fresh New Content Including A Challenge Mode

Popular indie horror RPG Ao Oni is getting a Steam and Nintendo Switch release this July 26th. In addition to the original game, this updated version will feature a “High Speed Mode” to challenge the Ao Oni at 2x speed, going up to 15x speed, and an entirely new chapter with new protagonist Ai, called “Ao Oni -Ai’s Story-”.

Ao Oni was originally released in 2004 by Japanese indie developer noprops, and it tells the story of Hiroshi who investigates a haunted mansion with his classmates, only to be pursued relentlessly by the titular Ao Oni. Hiroshi must explore the mansion and find a way to escape…before he gets caught. It was such a hit during its time that it inspired sequels, spin-offs, and novelizations. Its most recent entry in the franchise was the action-stealth horror game Absolute Fear AOONI, a 3D reboot of the original game, released last April of this year.

This re-release of Ao Oni is now the second official title to make it to English-speaking shores, along with several other language options such as Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Russian.

New Protagonist, Ai

The game’s new content, Ai’s Story, focuses on Ai, dragged to the same Western-style mansion of the original game by her friend, Mika (it is currently unknown if this is the same Mika from the original iteration). Upon entering the mansion, she passes out from unknown causes and upon waking up, she discovers that Mika is missing. Ai must now explore the eerie complex whose rooms and structures change every time they enter and find both Mika and the key to escaping.

Ai’s Story will feature multiple endings depending on your choices and what you do in game.
