BOKURA Celebrates First Anniversary, Second Game In The Works

Creator tokoronyori aims for a more intense second title

First Anniversary With Some Goodies

New Languages, And 50% Off

BOKURA celebrates its first anniversary with a bang! The game, released on PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, and iOS and Android devices, is getting a language update, and a first anniversary sale of 50% off! This was announced on BOKURA’s Steam community logs, addressed by tokoronyori himself.

With that said, the following languages will be added onto the game:
- Danish
- Swedish
- Czech
- Portuguese (Portugal)
- Dutch

And the game is now 50% off on Steam and Nintendo Switch, purchasable at a low price of $2.74 USD. The iOS version of the game still sits at $2.99 USD, while the Google Play Store version for Android is available for $2.49 USD. Please take note that in order to play with your player two, they must also own a copy of the game, so make use of the discount before it goes away!

tokoronyori Thanks Players For The 600,000 Copies

In addition to the first anniversary, the game has also reached another milestone—BOKURA has confirmed to have sold over 600,000 copies! Initially, tokoronyori was only gunning for 500 people to buy the game, and at most 100,000…but 600,000 was unimaginable until the actual copies sold reached that number.

“It honestly doesn’t feel real. I could imagine maybe 500 people buying the game, but for 600,000 to make the purchase and find the time to play it with someone is not something I imagined ever happening. So, I have nothing but sincere gratitude for the game’s success,” he shared with Automaton Media in an interview on August 9th.

While the game already had some kind of small following during the time the developer released a video showcasing the game at INDIE Live Expo, these massive numbers are attributed to the power of social media, where streamers and TikTok boosted BOKURA’s visibility.

“There were several occasions that caused overseas sales to go beyond our expectations. One was when an overseas pair of streamers, a man and a woman, introduced BOKURA on their TikTok. That video got an unbelievable number of views, and it even boosted sales. Our localization efforts focused mainly on English and Chinese at first, but expanding the number of supported languages also had a big impact on sales.” tokoronyori said in the same interview. “For example, when the video in English went super viral, it naturally reached people who speak English as a second language as well. But people sometimes give up on games that do not support their first language. We were able to take advantage of this potential audience gained through viral videos by promoting proper localization and allowing people to play the game in their own language. I’m talking like I did it myself, but it was Kodansha who did the work in this area.”

BOKURA: planet Coming In 2025

And to top it all off, tokoronyori announced the game’s successor, aptly named BOKURA: planet! Set in an unknown planet where the two protagonists crash-land in, players will then attempt to escape the planet in one piece. The next title (the developer insists that the game is not a direct sequel) is similar to its predecessor where two players will try to communicate and cooperate with the other to solve puzzles that can only be solved together. The central concept of BOKURA: planet was already something he wanted to fulfill even before the first title, and now he is reaching out again to turn that game into a reality.

However, he teased a whole new mechanic: Push. One can infer that you can push obstacles around, but he made the distinction that you can push your partner away…or even off a cliff. “Not only can you enjoy the cooperation with your partner, you can enjoy the grudge & intensity not seen much in other co-op games,” he stated. “I also fulfilled my desire to add sadistic elements I want players to face. A lot of those have been packed into this game. I saw players getting along so well with each other in BOKURA, which made me want to see them fight more (laughs). To make that happen, I tried to make the content more emotional to get players riled up.”

BOKURA: planet is now available to wishlist on Steam, so be sure to add it to your wishlist for the latest updates as you wait for the game to arrive in 2025!
