‘Elona 2’ Is Not A Real Sequel To The Original Game, Says Developer

The publisher has no permission to use Elona 2 as a title

No Approval From The Developer

Developer Noa Puts Out Statement

Elona 2 is not the successor to the original game and that the usage of the name “Elona 2” was without his permission, Elona developer Noa shared on their official X (Twitter) account last week, August 9th. “As an independent developer, I do not have the strength to fight, but I would like to state that ‘Elona 2’ is not the successor to ‘Elona’ and that I have refused to use the title ‘Elona 2’ when I was approached to do so.”

This is a response in light of the news that game publisher Hong Kong Kunpan Culture Entertainment (Kunpan Games for short) previously advertised that the mobile title “Elona 2~Pixel Art x Isekai x Adventure RPG” was a direct sequel to the original game. Following Noa’s response, Kunpan Games removed the press release on “Elona 2” from Japanese site PR Times and also posted on their own official X (Twitter) that their “Elona 2” is a sequel to Elona Mobile, a different mobile game from 2021. Elona Mobile was developed with authorization from Noa themselves, but is not a direct port of the game whatsoever.

However, Kunpan Games claimed in the initial Japanese press release that it is the “latest successor to Elona” which takes place in the same universe as the original game. Despite their clarifications of it being a sequel of a different game, their words in the original Japanese press release may state otherwise. As a form of protest, some fans have taken to posting in X (Twitter) community notes about the situation to inform the public. Although, it doesn’t seem that Noa will push for legal action against the game publisher, noting that they have no strength nor resources to fight legal battles.

Developer Noa Is Working On Official Prequel

Despite all this, Noa is definitively working on something Elona-related—a prequel called Elin, an open-world RPG that is very much along the vein of the first title. This was possible with the help of a passionate player community that has withstood the test of time for 15 years, successfully crowdfunding its development through Kickstarter. The beta test for the game already began last June, and it is slated for an Early Access launch later this year.
