OMORI Finds Second Life As An Internet Browser And Media Player

So you can play a game inside a game…OMORI-ception?

From Horror Game To Browser

The Game Runs On Chromium

Did you know that your copy of OMORI also doubles as a browser and media player? Curious players have discovered that the psychological horror indie game OMORI can be used as one! This is because the game is created in RPGMaker MV and operates through Google’s Chromium shell; hence, dragging and dropping media files and URLs onto the game’s window will allow it to be viewed.

OMORI fan Elson on YouTube shared this discovery on his channel, explaining that OMORI’s source code contains the framework called nw.js, which lets developers create applications using all Web technologies. And again, because of its Chromium-based nature, it also doubles as a browser.
Ever since players realized this, they have been using it for the most hilarious reasons, with Toontown memes and the infamous Rick Roll being played on the OMORI browser. Some users have also expressed their interest in trying to play web games on the game. Game-ception! A commenter on Elson’s video also shared that their Mac mistakenly recognized OMORI as the default app to run files after they deleted their original browser, Opera, from their computer.

It’s a strange reason for the game to make headlines again, but it’s all in good fun! Now someone just has to find out how to play OMORI on OMORI…

Surreal And Colorful Psychological Horror

OMORI is an indie horror game released in 2020 that puts players through the eyes of a young teenage hikikomori (Japanese term for modern-day hermits with extreme social isolation) named Sunny, who has an alter-ego in his dream world named Omori. As Sunny-slash-Omori, players will get to see both the real world and the dream world, and tackle many of the problems Sunny is going through in his mind. Darker and more sensitive concepts such as anxiety, depression, and psychological trauma are just some of the issues featured in the game.

It became such a hit that it received numerous positive reviews both on critic sites and on the game’s Steam page itself, with over 65 thousand reviews and garnering an Overwhelmingly Positive rating. OMORI was compared to other hit games such as Earthbound, Undertale, and Yume Nikki, that even with some grips about the overall gameplay, players are able to enjoy the story and find appeal in it, finding themselves wrapped up in the narrative. Most reviewers strongly highlight that first-time OMORI players should go in blind and experience the entire story without spoilers.

OMORI is available to play on PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
